Annotated Bibliography (Assignment Instruction) Using the MLA style, create an annotated bibliography including 5-10 bad sources for your research-based argument essay, within the general scope of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) – see below for “suggested topics” (if you want to research on a different topic, get my approval ASAP). Most of your annotated sources must be from academic/library databases (one or two, if necessary, can be from trustworthy sources from media, government, organizations, etc). Use the source evaluation rubric to select and assess sources before you decide to annotate them for your research paper. . The annotated bibliography must be done in two steps: 1) print all your sources and underline/highlight key ideas, annotate (i.e., take notes on the margin of the printout) as you read, 2) once you’ve developed a working thesis based on the active reading process, type up your annotations in your assigned Google Doc assignment file, as instructed below. The annotation entries on your assignment Google Doc, which you will complete in preparation for the researched argument essay, must start with a standard MLA style list of “Works Cited” with each source entry followed by: 1) a brief odd summary of the key argument/issue of the source, 2) specific details that are central to understanding the source and/or will help you to develop/support your argument, 3) a note about how you plan to use the source in your paper, 4) a note about why you believe the source is reliable and relevant, especially if the source is not a standard research article from a reputed academic journal.

AI Reasoning:

Alignment with Outcomes:

  • The assignment aligns with the learning outcome of evaluating and selecting sources for a research-based argument essay. However, it could be improved by explicitly connecting the annotated bibliography task to the development of transferable skills in information literacy and critical evaluation of sources.

Cognitive Demand:

  • The assignment requires students to analyze and evaluate sources, which involves higher-order thinking. To enhance cognitive demand, adding a component where students must justify their selection of each source based on specific criteria would further strengthen this criterion.

Authenticity/Context:

  • The assignment situates students in the context of conducting research on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), providing a relevant and authentic task. To enhance authenticity, incorporating real-world scenarios or case studies related to GenAI could deepen students' understanding and engagement.

Accessibility/Equity:

  • The assignment lacks considerations for accessibility and equity, as it assumes access to academic/library databases without providing alternative pathways for students who may not have such access. To improve, offering a diverse range of source options and guidance on how to access them from various sources would enhance equity.

Process Visibility:

  • The assignment emphasizes the process of selecting and annotating sources, promoting visibility of student work. To enhance process visibility, encouraging students to document their decision-making process and revisions could provide a clearer insight into their critical thinking.

AI Transparency & Ethical Literacy:

  • The assignment addresses AI transparency by requiring students to evaluate the reliability and relevance of sources, which is a positive aspect. To further strengthen AI transparency, explicitly discussing how AI tools could be used in the source evaluation process and highlighting ethical considerations related to AI-generated content would be beneficial.

Teaching Methods:

  • The assignment engages students in AI-aware learning by focusing on source evaluation within the context of GenAI. To enhance teaching methods, incorporating interactive activities or discussions on the ethical implications of using AI in research could further engage students and promote inclusive learning environments.
