Social Determinants of Health: Analysis Project Purpose In this assignment, you will analyze the relationship between social differences, inequality, and issues within American healthcare and health service provision. This helps you better understand the role of social categories, public policy, and how Americans practically experience, receive, and understand healthcare. Product Choose a topic in contemporary politics, related to the provision of healthcare or health services. Develop an analysis intersecting that topic with a social category such as race, gender, or social class. How do different Americans, based on their gender, sexuality, income level, racial or ethnic identity, or disability status, encounter that issue? What privileges might they possess, or challenges they face? In what ways do public policies reduce or amplify differences in healthcare access for different Americans based on social inequality or inequity? Your topic should be narrow enough to analyze in 8–10 minutes. For example, instead of “racial inequality in healthcare,” focus on “racial disparities in postpartum care in U.S. hospitals.” Instead of “gender and healthcare in the armed forces,” consider “feminist perspectives on Navy and Marine Corps nursing since the Vietnam War.” Example Topics the interaction of race and mental health provision for incarcerated Americans. different gendered experiences with GLP-1 prescriptions and use. Ageism and access to primary and diagnostic care. Assessment You will be assessed on the following criteria: Clarity of Topic Do you clearly identify a particular issue in healthcare or health services, and a social category? How well have your organized themes, subtopics, or other elements supporting your topic? Depth of Analysis and Discussion To what extent have you identified specific factors relevant to your topic? Have you good examples or evidence to support your analysis? Do you have at least three good quality sources, according to criteria established in the first week’s class lecture? Slide Quality Are you slides professionally designed, easy to read, visually compelling, and free of clutter or unnecessary content? Presentation Delivery Is your narrative delivery concise, organized, free of verbal tics such as “um,” and conveys professional engagement? Is the sound quality good, your voice clear, and the recording free of distracting background noise? Sources Your last slide should list all sources consulted for your presentation, and each slide should have appropriate references in the Notes area. Assignment Process Research your chosen topic using scholarly literature (academic sources), public policy and advocacy documents, and reputable general news sources, such as the New York Times or Wall Street Journal. You should develop a script for your presentation, or at least a detailed outline. If you attempt to simply speak off your slides, you will likely have trouble with delivery. Generative AI Use You may use a generative AI chatbot for assistance with the following: An initial survey of the topic, aimed at identifying subtopics, perspectives, or likely sources. Feedback on your draft slidedeck. In each case, you need to share a link to the AI chat on your reference slide. Know that you bear responsibility for anything you submit. So take steps to verify (research) anything an AI provides. Hallucinations are always a possibility with AI, and like a conversation with a human consultant, misunderstandings are possible, too. Deliverables A slidedeck, to accompany a presentation on the topic. It should be between roughly 12-24 slides, including a title slide and reference list slide. A video presentation where you provide a voiceover narrative slideshow presentation. This should be between 7 and 9 minutes long. Having yourself in an inset window is optional and not required for this assignment. An infographic that partners with and summarizes your presentation. This should be 187 square inches, which is two 8.5 x 11” pages in area, although you may choose your own aspect ratio. The infographic may use some charts, tables, and other visuals from the slides, but should not simply be some or all slides combined. Deadlines Your video presentation and slidedeck are due in Week 11 of the course. Your infographic is due in Week 12 of the course. See our UBLearns course space for specific due dates and times.
