Adavances in personal computing power and network speed have allowed real-time, interactive science and math explorations in most every area of education in sciences and mathematics. These new learning environments help us to understand wonderfully-complex real-world phenomena, while opening up new areas of learnercentered, group-oriented, discovery-based learning.
Robert M. Panoff, Ph.D. will explore several examples from recent computational science approaches to help faculty become competent and confident in using these free and web-accessible tools from Shodor, NSDL, and others. A world-class education requires world-class resources, and all math and science teachers should be able to bring interactive modeling environments to their own teaching practice. We will explore a variety of free and low-cost sources for modeling tools from Computational Science Education Reference Desk, a pathway project of the National Science Digital Library.

Training Science Faculty to Support Scholarly Work and Undergraduate Researchwith High Performance Computing Tools
The goal of this conference is to provide professional development for faculty in the utilization of high performance computing tools and techniques with undergraduate students. Faculty will be exposed to the theory behind computational and mathematical modeling across disciplines with practical examples of how these models are applicable to undergraduate coursework and research in applied mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology. Faculty will learn important information about the tools themselves and how to leverage campus technology to provide a setting for high performance computing. Two tracks in each discipline (biology, chemistry and physics), one theoretical and one practical, are available for participants.

Presentation by Dr. Gabor Herman: During the last four decades an amazing development taken place in science, medicine and technology: we can now observe how macromolecular nanomachines (such as the ribosomes) change their shapes to perform their function, we can produce renderings of the interior of the living heart as it pumps blood, and see how the grains of metals deform and change during a process intending to increase their strength. Such abilities are possible due to a combination of improvements in instruments to collect relevant data (such as electron microscopes, computed tomography scanners, and synchrotons generating monochromatic X-rays), mathematical procedures for turning such data into dynamically varying three-dimensional descriptions, and computational methods that implement such procedures and display the resulting information in times short enough to be practically useful. Dr. Gabor Herman is an accomplished Computer Scientist currently at CUNY. He currently has 5 books in print related to medical imaging and Tomography. His papers have been cited hundreds of times in the literature, and he often lectures worldwide on the subject of medical imaging.
Trip To NASA. April 3-4 of 2006
During April 3-4 of 2006 , Hiperc Club will travel to NASA Godard Space Flight Center. The entire Trip will be free of cost. The students will have the opportunity to visit NASA's facilities. NASA will donate computing equipment to BSC.
